Assignment

One of the challenges of putting together the story of ancient history is figuring out the order of events. In this activity, we explore the issues involved in determining the date of the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt.

First, check out this explanation of the list of pharaohs from the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Second, read this excerpt from the ESV Study Bible, which outlines the arguments for the earlier date and for the later date for the Exodus.

One note—the "Amarna period" in Egyptian history (see the fourth point on the list of arguments for the earlier date) refers to the rule of a pharaoh who was considered a heretic by the priests of Amon. He moved the capital from Thebes to Amarna, and he pursued the worship of Aton as the chief god (some say only god) rather than the worship of Amon as the chief.

After you're finished with the reading, take the assessment.
